This infamous penitentiary housed inmates from 1858 to 2002 and lends its name to one of pop culture’s beloved Blues Brothers, “Joliet Jake.” When it closed, the site was left abandoned and suffered rampant vandalism, but in 2017 the Joliet Area Historical Museum began its efforts to stabilize and restore the prison. Today, self-guided and after dark tours are offered throughout the summer and fall.
