The small community was settled in 1877 by formerly enslaved African Americans seeking a safe haven. The railroad’s decision to bypass the growing town and the challenges of High Plains farming hurt the economy, and many residents departed. Today’s visitors tour Township Hall, a hotel/residence, two churches and a schoolhouse.
