A Union Army base in slave-holding Kentucky became a recruitment and training center for Black soldiers trading enlistment for emancipation. Over 10,000 former slaves became soldiers between 1864 and 1865 and formed eight U.S. Colored Troops regiments. The base also created a refuge for parents, wives, and children of enlistees.
