“Tons of granite resting precariously on a slender stone base,” is a popular description of this natural feature on the western shore of Lake Tahoe. Located along a short self-guided nature trail, Balancing Rock weighs 260,000 pounds and has fascinated visitors for more than a century. Eventually, it will collapse due to base erosion.
