Planning a trip? Check out the Poverty Point National Monument website.
Evidence dictates the enormous Late Archaic earthworks of Louisiana’s Poverty Point were constructed between 1700 and 1100 BCE. Archaeologists believe the site was used as a possible trading post, ceremonial center, or ancient city. The concentric ridges, mounds, and plaza have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
