Evidence dictates the enormous Late Archaic earthworks of Louisiana’s Poverty Point were constructed between 1700 and 1100 BCE. Archaelogists believe the site was used as a possible trading post, ceremonial center, or ancient city. The concentric ridges, mounds, and plaza have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
