Philanthropist and equestrian John D. Rockefeller Jr. championed enjoyment of Mount Desert Island roads free of motor vehicles. He financed most of this aesthetically pleasing 45-mile road system that leads horseback riders, horsedrawn carriages, walkers, and mountain bikers through Acaria's gorgeous landscapes.
