Completed in 1824 to protect the Potomac River approach to the nation’s capital, Fort Washington replaced an older defense complex destroyed by American soldiers to prevent its fall to the British during the War of 1812. The picturesque park is a favorite destination for hikers, anglers, bicyclists and history buffs who may witness an artillery demonstration during a self-guided tour of the grounds.
