Opened in 1891 as a retreat for the Chautauqua social and education movement, Glen Echo later was operated as an amusement park. Today, the premier cultural and recreational attraction is home to resident artists, children’s theaters, galleries, concerts, dance program, a 1921 carousel, special events and festivals. Visitors also can attend classes in the visual and performing arts.
