This port city was infamous for its 17th-century witch trials, but Salem’s contributions to maritime commerce and American economic growth cannot be overstated. Four wharfs at the waterfront site are preserved, and several historic buildings are open for tours. Visitors step aboard Friendship of Salem, a replica 1797 sailing ship.
