Heeding a missionary's call that German pioneers needed spiritual support, Pastor Wilhelm Loehe sent a mission congregation to the Midwest in the 1840s. THey established a settlement intended to be loyal to Germany and built flour, saw, and woolen mills, and produced beer, cheese, and sausage. The name given to this Little Bavaria along the Cass River means "Courage of the Franconians."
