It only was in use from 1858 to 1861, but the 3,300-mile route from St. Louis and Memphis to San Francisco played a key role in linking east and west. Segments of the trail system traveled by stagecoaches hauling mail, freight and passengers welcome visitors who take road tours, bike, hike and stop at museums and historic sites.
