In June of 1876, Lt. Col. George A. Custer of the U.S. Army 7th Calvary perished at his “last stand” in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The U.S. Army, seeking to push tribes back onto reservations, was overwhelmingly defeated by the Cheyenne and Lakota. Today monuments stand to honor fallen Native Americans and men of the 7th Calvary.
