Planning a trip? Check out the Mayfield Fort Historic Site website.
Built in 1861 by Confederate troops and enslaved laborers, Mayfield was one of 12 earthwork forts constructed to defend the Manassas Gap and Orange and Alexandria railroads. Troops stationed here saw action during the Battle of Bull Run Bridge in 1862. Today, this fort is the only one remaining of the original 12 and serves as an outdoor park and historic site.
