Between 1841 and 1866, approximately three hundred and fifty thousand people traveled west past Scotts Bluff on the Oregon, California and Mormon Pioneer Trails. In 1851, the trail through Mitchell Pass, now located in Scotts Bluff National Monument, was improved, becoming the preferred route of the westbound emigrants.
