This U.S. Forest Service observatory offers a face-to-face view into Mount St. Helens’ crater and the surrounding blast zone. Opened in 1997 and named for volcanologist David A. Johnston, it became the monument’s iconic front-row classroom. Inside, exhibits and films explain the 1980 eruption’s force and the landscape’s long recovery.
