Thomas Jefferson stood here in 1783, famously declaring the scene "worth a voyage across the Atlantic." Due to erosion concerns, stone supports were added in the 
19th century to stabilize the shale formation. It remains a favorite stop along the Appalachian Trail. Hikers who reach it are rewarded with brilliant views of Harpers Ferry.
