On Flagstaff’s Mars Hill, this historic campus helped define American planetary astronomy. Founded by Percival Lowell in 1894 to study Mars, this is the location where Clyde Tombaugh ultimately discovered Pluto. The programs here still track everything from planetary atmospheres to near-Earth asteroids. Under Flagstaff’s dark night skies, visitors feel how close “far away” can get.
