Stretching nearly five miles across the Straits of Mackinac, this enormous suspension bridge created a long-awaited direct roadway between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. Opened in 1957, it used 85,000 blueprints, 4.9 million rivets, and 3,500 workers. Its towers rise 552 feet above the water, leaving clearance for freighters. “Mighty Mac” is the Great Lakes’ grandest engineered marvel.
