Off Africa’s east coast lies the world’s fourth-largest island. Evolving in isolation, it holds outsized biodiversity: 80–90% of species here occur nowhere else. It is also the only place on earth where wild lemurs exist. The protected Avenue of Baobabs – a throng of 800-year-old “upside-down trees” – showcases one of the six species native to the island as well as its first natural monument.
