This is Asia’s smallest country. Spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, it includes 1,192 islands, of which only about 187 are inhabited. The capital region in the Malé atolls compress most of the population onto a handful of islands. Its economy and identity are still tied to coral reefs, tuna fishing, and centuries-old sea lanes. It remains one of the world’s most popular tropical destinations.
