This shoreline boulder became an American icon despite never appearing in the Pilgrims’ written accounts. Tradition linking it to the original landing did not surface in writing until 1741. A later attempted move split the stone in two. The boulder now shows the carved date “1620,” added in 1880 when its pieces were rejoined.
