Beside old Route 66, an enormous 134-foot steel thermometer towers like a desert sundial over the town of Baker, California. The sign weighs 76,812 pounds and uses roughly 5,000 LED bulbs to illuminate its silhouette. Built in 1991 by Young Electric Sign Company, both its height and the fact that it was engineered to top out at 134°F are nods to Death Valley’s famed 1913 heat record.

Although the World’s Tallest Thermometer isn’t located directly on the original path of Route 66, it has become a beloved roadside stop for travelers exploring the historic highway. Many Route 66 adventurers make a quick detour to see the towering landmark, snap a photo, and experience one of the quirkiest attractions associated with the Mother Road.
