Expanded over time, the 27.5 acres of Ellis Island lie within the territories of New York and New Jersey in New York Harbor. The U.S. Army, Navy, and Coast Guard used it for 80 years before tearing down existing fortifications and building the immigrant processing center. A museum and former hospital are open to visitors and accessible by ferry.
