Entering Lower New York Harbor required navigating a narrow channel of sandbars and shoals off Sandy Hook. A series of shipwrecks took a financial toll and led to the building of a light with an octagonal tower. This National Historic Landmark entered service in 1764 casting a fixed white light over ships heading into the popular port.
