A sandstone bluff in Northwestern New Mexico towers 200 feet above the valley floor, shielding a waterhole below. The reliability of the pool fed by rain and melted snow attracted Ancestral Puebloans who established a village atop El Morro in the late 1200s to the 1400’s. Later, Spanish and American travelers - including the U.S. Army Camel Corps - discovered ancient petroglyphs and left inscriptions of their own.
