In May 1991, workers in present-day Lower Manhattan discovered the remains of over 400 free and enslaved Africans and over 500 artifacts. Excavation and research provided insight into the health, life, and culture of Africans in the 17th and 18th centuries. This sacred space is used to honor their heritage and historic contributions.
