Constructed on the tip of Manhattan Island to defend New York Harbor during the War of 1812, this fort never fired on enemies. Once vacated by the U.S. Army it became Castle Garden, used first as an entertainment center and later as an immigrant landing depot. One in six Americans descend from an immigrant landing here.
