Finalized in 1852 for a wealthy China trade merchant, this was Newport’s most imposing residence before the rise of the Vanderbilt mansions. It evolved from Italianate villa to Second Empire under architect Richard Morris Hunt. Known for political ties and opulent events, like a 2,000- guest picnic, it is a tribute to 19th-century social ambition.
