Completed in 1892 as a gift from William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva, this lavish summer “cottage” redefined Newport society. With its Beaux-Arts grandeur and 500,000 cubic feet of imported marble, it was called a “temple to the arts.” Inspired by Versailles, it cost over 11 million dollars. Later, it was a stage for women’s suffrage rallies.
