Over 500,000 acres of hardwood forest near Asheville protect some of Southern Appalachians' highest peaks. Waterfalls, including Looking Glass and Moore Cove, can be viewed from a system of hiking trails or by car along the Blue Ridge Parkway. George W. Vanderbilt sold the initial tract of land to the U.S. government and inspired the creation of the nation's first forestry school.
