The Russian Empire claimed Alaska in the 18th century and selected Sitka as the colonial capital. These invaders met indigenous resistance and fought the Battle of Sitka in 1804 against the Tlingit. Exhibits in the Russian Bishop’s House are a reminder of this colonial influence. Coastal walks are dotted with Tlingit and Haida totem poles.
