Charles Young was the first African American to achieve the status of Colonel in the United States Army. He was also the first black superintendent of a National Park tasked with operating General Grant and Sequoia National Parks. It was there that he and the Ninth Calvary, a troop of all black men nicknamed ‘Buffalo Soldiers,’ were sent to protect the parks.
