At dawn on November 27, 1868, 7th Cavalry troops under the command of George Armstrong Custer attacked and destroyed a Cheyenne village, killing dozens of people, including women, children, Chief Black Kettle and his wife. Visitor center exhibits and a self-guided trail walk interpret a surprise attack that often is called a massacre.
