Towering 60 feet above the landscape, this structure modeled after an ancient Roman triumphal arch honors the arrival of George Washington and his Continental Army to their 1777-78 winter encampment. Disease, malnutrition and the elements took terrible tolls, but a better-trained force marched off into history that spring.
