On July 3, 1754, 22-year-old British officer George Washington endured the only surrender of his military career after his force was defeated by the French and their Indian allies in the first skirmish of the French and Indian War. The main park unit is home to visitor center
exhibits, the reconstructed fort and a historic tavern.
