The Sunken Road became Bloody Lane after 5,500 soldiers were killed or wounded in bitter fighting there during the 1862 Civil War battle that halted Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North and encouraged President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation freeing Southern slaves. A road tour and hiking trails lead visitors through this hallowed site.
