Flowing 10.5 miles through a scenic gorge in the ancient Appalachian Mountains, this stretch of a 77-mile-long river named for the bluish limestone found in its upper portions is a haven for flora, fauna and lovers of the outdoors. Visitors fish for bass and bluegill, paddle when water levels allow and hike the Bluestone Turnpike Trail, where they follow in the bootprints of Civil War soldiers.
