On the evening of June 16, 1775, a hastily built earthen fort was constructed atop Breed’s Hill in Charlestown to delay the advance of British forces. A bloody battle began the next day, ending in major casualties and a Provincial retreat. The site is commemorated today with a 221-foot granite obelisk and a statue in honor of the militias’ commander.
