In the mid-19th Century, over 250,000 emigrants traveled to California in search of gold and prosperity. Five thousand miles of trail follow their footsteps across ten states as preserved by the Historic Trail. Today history is present as wagon ruts from times past remain deeply carved into the landscape and are visible on many portions of the trail.
