Originally the homestead of Matthew Talbot, the fort was created by joining the farm’s buildings with palisade walls. During the Anglo-Cherokee War, approximately 200 settlers withstood a two-week siege of the fort in the summer of 1776. The re-constructed fort is based on archaeological data from the original site about ¼ mile from the park.
