A monument marks the spot on the White Sands Missile Range where the first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945. A second device devastated Hiroshima 
three weeks later. The site preserves the base camp that housed the scientists and support team and a ranch house where the bomb’s plutonium core was assembled.
