Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon used plaster and bronze to bring to life a famous photograph of six Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. This memorial is a tribute to all Marines who died in service to their country since 1775 and is encircled with the names of major Marine Corps offensives. President Eisenhower dedicated it on November 10, 1954 atop Arlington Ridge.
