Granite monuments representing each of the 50 states and six U.S. territories that contributed to the war effort surround a pool and fountain at this moving memorial on the National Mall. A wall bears more than 4,000 stars, each honoring 100 men and women who gave their lives. More than 16 million members of the “greatest generation” served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
