Just off Route 66 at Tulsa’s Expo Square, a 76-foot oilman leans on a derrick brought from a depleted Seminole oilfield. First built for the International Petroleum Exposition in 1953, it was installed permanently in 1966. Oklahoma named it the state monument in 1979. The inscription on its base salutes the workers who “…have created from God’s abundance a better life for mankind.”
