Skeptics once argued that construction of this route in Custer State Park was impossible. It was completed in 1922 nonetheless, leading travelers through Black Hills tunnels, forests and meadows past granite spires known as “needles”. Snowfall closes the road in the winter, but it remains open to foot, bicycle and cross-country ski traffic.
