The Union Army operated a supply depot in Johnsonville during the Civil War, sending supplies by rail to troops in battle. The depot came under attack on November 4, 1864, ending in Confederate victory. Surviving earthworks from Fort Johnson, replica soldier huts, Crocket Cemetery, and park exhibits and programming commemorate the depot, the battle, and the railroad town that succeeded it.
