Centuries ago, settlers built homesteads deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Locals mined for iron and logged the rich dense forest. The water wheel at the visitor center and the house at the Miller Farmstead are reminders of these early times. Within the 2,156-acre park, trails lead to Chestnut Ridge Overlook and the Doe River, while a short drive leads to the world’s largest rhododendron gardens.
