Mangrove trees lining the water’s edge at this Caribbean site play vital ecological roles. Mangroves provide shelter for hatchling sea turtles and serve as nurseries for fish, shrimp and other species. The park area once visited by Christopher Columbus also preserves coral reefs, a deep underwater canyon and ancient archeological sites.
