Tens of millions of bison once roamed the Great Plains. Today, approximately 500,000 of these iconic animals remain in North America. Theodore Roosevelt is home to several hundred of the continent’s heaviest land mammal, which should only be viewed from a safe distance. Bison can weigh more than a ton, and they are renowned for their surly disposition.
