In the Hawaiian language Ala Kahakai translates to “trail by the sea”. It traverses 175 miles along the coast of the Island of Hawaii and links land divisions known as ahupua’a. Hikers may access open portions of the trail from any of the island’s four national parks where they may spot unique plants and animals while overlooking lava beds and turquoise seas.
